Marjorie Ellen Berney

Omak, Wash.

unknown - October 14, 2013

Marjorie Ellen Berney, 98, died Oct. 14, 2013 at a north Omak full care home. She was born in 1915 in the Goldendale area and was raised on a cattle ranch near there. Her parents were George and Daisy Harlan of the big Harlan families of America whose ancestors migrated here from the British Isles in the late 1600s.
At an early age, she met Roland S. Berney while she was cooking for a harvest crew. They were married shortly thereafter when she was still a late teenager.
In 1934, she and her husband, “Berney” as he was known, moved all their meager belongings and their one-year-old daughter, Norma Jean, to a small ranch, five miles east of Omak on the reservation. Her parents, two brothers, and one sister also moved to the same area. The young couple and her parents both operated small cattle ranches on the reservation.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, her parents, one older sister, two younger brothers, and a grandson. Survivors include her daughter, Norma Jean Mulloy; her son, George E. “Buzz” Berney; six grandkids; 10 great-grandkids; six great-great-grandkids; and several nieces and nephews.
Marjorie was one of the best gardeners, cooks, artists, cake decorators, painters, needleworkers, sewers, etc. She was a very accomplished horse trainer and cowgirl. Marjorie was a 4-H leader, a member of the Okanogan County Cowbells, and a highly respected member of the rural Okanogan County Lifestyle.
