Darrell Thomas Gaffney, 80, passed away Sept. 1, 2013, in Omak. He was born to Thomas and Florence Gaffney on Jan. 10, 1933, in Seattle, Wash. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Cornelia in 2009.
He attended Marymount Military Academy in Spanaway, and Seattle Preparatory School, earning an All-American in sports. He joined the U.S. Army and served honorably in the Korean War. He spent many happy summer days on Camano Island and American Lake with family and friends. Darrell lived in the Pacific Northwest his whole life, both on the westside and eastside of the state, and especially enjoyed camping, fishing, and the outdoors. He was a lover of the great outdoors and spent his remaining years in the Okanogan.
He married Cornelia Ann Roche, a student at the University of Washington, August 1955, in Seattle. They had eight children, Mark, Kristine, Brian, Jennifer, Teresa, Elaine, Gretchen and Doreen. They raised the family in Everett until he moved his family to the Okanogan area. He was a dedicated father who raised his eight children and taught them the love of the Pacific Northwest and great outdoors. He owned and managed land and was involved in timber and mining throughout his life.
His family was originally from Scandinavia (Borgeson) and Ireland (Gaffney) and was one of the early settlers in Bellingham, Wash. in the late 1880s. He spent his remaining years enjoying his children, grandchildren and spending time at the family-built cabin in the mountains, as well as at his home in Omak.
Darrell was active in many of the churches in Okanogan and enjoyed scripture conversation with all faiths.
He is survived by his children, Mark Gaffney, Kristine Gaffney, Brian Gaffney, Jennifer Gaffney Countryman, Teresa Goar, Elaine Gorsegner, Gretchen Gaffney Khdair, and Doreen Gaffney. Most of his children continue to live in Washington.
Funeral services with honorable military recognition were held Sept. 9, 2013, at the Okanogan Valley Memorial Gardens with Joe Fenison officiating. Burial was at the Okanogan Cemetery.
