City considers lower speed limit
BRIDGEPORT – The City Council is discussing whether the Foster Creek Avenue speed limit should be reduced from 35 mph to 30.
The change was recommended by the state Department of Transportation, which was called in by business owners who no longer live in town, Finance Director Karen Brown said.
“There seems to be a difference in opinion about whether they (the council) should go ahead and accept that or not,” Brown said. “Some want to leave it alone, don’t feel it’s a problem. Some felt that a reduction of 5 mph was not significant enough, others just the opposite.”
The council will likely discuss it again, Brown said.
The council next meets at 7 p.m. Sept. 11 in City Hall, 1206 Columbia Ave.
Winthrop council member resigns
WINTHROP – Town Councilwoman Tiffany Langdalen has resigned.
The council will discuss her resignation during a meeting Wednesday night.
Planner Rocklynn Culp said Langdalen submitted a resignation letter Aug. 21, effective immediately, because she’s moving out of town.
Langdalen’s term expires at the end of December. Michael Strulic is the sole candidate for the seat — Position No. 2 — in the Nov. 5 election.
In other business, the council will hear a funding request from Okanogan County Transportation and Nutrition, consider a zoning amendment ordinance and appoint a new mayor pro tempore.
The meeting is at 7 p.m. in the Winthrop Auditorium Hen House, 51 state Highway 20.
Earthquake jiggles south county
BREWSTER – A 1.5-magnitude earthquake struck east of town last week off of U.S. Highway 97, about 27 miles south of Okanogan.
According to the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network, the quake struck at 1:56 p.m. Aug. 29. It rumbled at about 5.3 miles below the Earth’s surface.
On the network’s website, no one in the area noted that they felt it.
The last earthquake to cause damage in Okanogan County was Nov. 18, 2011. The 4.6-magnitude quake jolted Okanogan Valley residents awake just after 5 a.m. and damaged the home of Pat Byrd near Green Lake.
A magnitude 2.6 earthquake was recorded July 9, 2012, east of Tonasket. The epicenter was about 0.6 miles deep and no damage was reported, according to the network.
County emergency meeting planned
OKANOGAN – The annual Okanogan County Local Emergency Planning Committee will meet from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 25 in the Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office conference room, 123 Fifth Ave. N.
The meeting is open to the public, county Emergency Management Specialist Glenda Beauregard said.
Also encouraged to attend are elected officials, the Okanogan County Public Utility District and other utilities, fire departments, Emergency Medical Services, local and state law enforcement, school districts, the American Red Cross, the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation, people who work with hazardous materials, and other community leaders.
Brewster seeks diver for project
BREWSTER – The city is looking for a new contractor to dive into its water reserve tanks and clear out manganese buildup.
The diver the city had hired planned to clean the tanks in August, but told the city they wouldn’t be available until October, Clerk/Treasurer Misty Ruiz said.
“For us to have it done in October is kind of pointless, because we’re trying to get it done before the winter,” she said.
The city still plans to flush the city’s water lines this fall once the tanks are clean.
County auditor to conduct ballot test
OKANOGAN – The Okanogan County Auditor’s Office will prepare for a routine logic and accuracy test later this month.
To prepare for it, auditor’s office employees will scan, resolve and write a partial “test deck” of ballots to mobile ballot boxes, Chief Deputy Mila Jury said. The preparation will be at 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 16, and is open to the public.
