Omak knocks down Cashmere

Pateros, Brewster pull down victories

CASHMERE – Omak improved to 3-2 in Caribou Trail League play by knocking off Cashmere, 3-0, on Sept. 28.

The Pioneers prevailed 25-20, 25-14 and 25-14.

“We started a bit flat in the first game, but made some adjustments and picked the intensity up in the second and third,” Omak coach Brittney Richter said. “We served well and had some great plays at the net throughout the match. We really utilized all of our hitters. We have a lot of girls on our team who are very versatile and we took advantage of that.”

Omak (3-2 overall, 3-2 league) is at Quincy (2-3, 2-2) on Thursday, Oct. 3.

PATEROS – The battle between the area’s top 1B/2B volleyball teams swayed to Pateros on Sept. 28.

The Nannies improved to 6-0 overall by knocking off Liberty Bell 25-9, 25-17 and 25-16.

“A much better match than the last one,” Pateros coach Gene Dowers said, referring to Pateros’ victory over the Mountain Lions in the Bridgeport tournament.

“Everybody got a little more involved in the offense,” Dowers said. “Our block was much more effective against the big kids in the middle for Liberty Bell. We’re doing better at knocking down the overpasses that come back when we’re serving really hard. We only had one rough patch on serve receive in the second set, but otherwise we’re much more solid in that department than a week ago.”

Pateros (6-0 overall, 1-0 league) is at Oroville (3-1, 1-0) on Saturday, Oct. 5.

BREWSTER – Brewster stayed in the hunt for a strong finish in the Caribou Trail League by stopping Quincy, 3-0, on Sept. 28.

The Bears won 25-8, 25-23 and 25-16.

“I thought we did a nice job of hitting our serving zones and passing off serve receive,” Brewster coach Marcy Boesel said. “We need to continue to improve on communication and transition.”

Chelan (3-0 overall, 3-0 league) is at Brewster (3-2, 3-2) on Saturday, Oct. 5.

OROVILLE – The Oroville High School volleyball team and officials showed up on time for a match with Mansfield on Sept. 28.

The problem was the Kernels were not en route.

“Mansfield was not able to field a team this year,” Mansfield Athletic Director Ric Bayless said.

Bayless said he notified athletic directors of the bad news.

Oroville Athletic Director Tam Hutchinson “misunderstood the email thinking that we were only canceling our junior varsity season,” Bayless said. “The only team we were allowed to put together was a JV team, as we were coming into the league in the middle of a count cycle.”

CURLEW – Curlew defeated Selkirk, but lost to Cusick in five sets during a doubleheader Sept. 28.

The Cougars won 25-4, 25-11 and 25-13 over Selkirk.

Olivia Volluz finished with 3 kills, 2 aces and a block for Curlew.

The Panthers won 13-25, 25-19, 19-25, 25-21 and 15-10.

Lindsey Gibson finished with 15 digs and 15 assists.

Volluz had 17 kills and 2 blocks.

Annaliese Fanning had 3 ace serves.

Curlew (4-2 overall, 1-1 league) is at Inchelium-Columbia (0-0, 0-0) in Hunters on Thursday, Oct. 3 and returns home for Republic (2-0, 0-0) on Saturday, Oct. 12.

WATERVILLE – Waterville knocked off Lake Roosevelt, 3-0, in a non-league match Sept. 28.

The Shockers won 25-21, 25-23 and 25-23.

“This was our third time playing Waterville this season,” Lake Roosevelt coach Nate Piturachsatit said.

“We beat them the previous two times, but they were all close matches. We knew this wasn’t going to be an easy game on their court.

Manson (0-4 overall) is at Lake Roosevelt on Thursday, Oct. 3, as league play begins.

OMAK – Cascade showed it’s the team to beat in the Caribou Trail League by sweeping Omak, 3-0, on Sept. 26.

The Kodiaks won 25-15, 25-16 and 25-18.

“We had to scramble defensively more than we should have, that took us out of being able to run our offense,” Omak coach Brittney Richter said. “They’re a team that you can’t give many free balls to without them taking advantage of it.

“We did improve with each game played. We started slowing the ball off the block and picking more up in the back row.”

PATEROS – Pateros opened the North Central League volleyball season strong, devouring Entiat, 3-0, on Sept. 26.

The Nannies won 25-11, 25-17 and 25-15, often putting together runs with ace serves.

“We relied a lot on our seniors to keep the pressure on Entiat and lead us through an off day,” Dowers said.

BRIDGEPORT – Bridgeport pulled out a five-set match against Manson, 3-2, on Sept. 26.

The Fillies won 25-23, 25-14, 7-25, 25-27 and 15-10.

Bridgeport topped Entiat, 3-1, on Sept. 28.

No statistics were received.

Liberty Bell (4-1 overall, 1-1 league) is at Bridgeport (3-2, 1-0) on Thursday, Oct. 3. Bridgeport is at Waterville (2-3, 2-3) on Saturday, Oct. 5.

Bridgeport stats against Manson: Ericka Martinez 9-9 serving, 5 aces; Jordan Peart 8 kills, 2 aces, 3 solo blocks; Courtney Austin 24 digs, 4 aces; Anita Velazquez 8 kills on 25 attempts.

OROVILLE – Oroville got past Lake Roosevelt, 3-1, in a league match Sept. 26.

The Hornets won 27-25, 25-12, 13-25 and 25-14.

Oroville was 80 percent on target with its passes to setter Brittany Jewett, coach Carrie Rise said.

“The entire team did a great job receiving, with the top three being Monica Herrera (21 passes on target), Mikayla Scott (20 passes on target) Andrea Perez (18 passes on target).

Jewett finished with 50 assists.

Oroville stats: Jessica Galvan 3 digs; Bridget Clark 2 kills; Rachelle Nutt 2 kills, 17 attack attempts, 5 blocks. Top servers were Brittany Jewett, Bridget, Clark and Andrea Perez.

CHELAN – Chelan dismantled Okanogan, 3-0, in league play Sept. 26.

The Goats won 25-8, 25-10 and 25-4.

“Chelan is a veteran team with a lot of talent,” Okanogan coach Michelle Daling said. “I’m sure they will be competing for a trophy in Yakima at the end of the year.”

Quincy (2-3 overall, 2-2 league) is at Okanogan (2-3, 2-3) on Tuesday, Oct. 8.

LEAVENWORTH – Tonasket’s match at Cascade planned for Sept. 28 was changed to Oct. 12.

“It was canceled due to a festival down there,” Tonasket coach Jackie Gliddon said.

Chelan (3-0 overall, 3-0 league) is at Tonasket (0-5, 0-3) on Thursday, Oct. 3.

WELLPINIT – Curlew beat Wellpinit, 3-0, in a league match Sept. 26.

The Cougars won 25-18, 25-18 and 25-19.

Curlew stats: Natalie Miller 4 kills; Lindsey Gibson 4 assists, 1 dig; Haleigh Gibson 1 ace; Alyssa Goree 2 blocks.

REPUBLIC – Republic beat Curlew, 3-1, in a league match Sept. 25.

The Tigers won 25-16, 19-25, 25-22 and 25-18.
